Behind The Scenes: How We Make Vehicle Mounted Cranes and Lifting Platforms – Penny Hydraulics Ltd

How does Penny Hydraulics’ Manufacturing Process Compare to Competitors?

At Penny Hydraulics, we know how important it is to streamline operations without sacrificing safety.

That’s why we take a consultative process, listening to our customers’ needs and requirements from day one, and keeping them in mind throughout the entire process. This has allowed us to develop a wide range of products that can be tailored to suit a specific vehicle or application, solving the unique problem for our customers.

Plus, our SwingLift Cranes and LoadLift loading platform ranges are built right here in the UK, in our purpose-built manufacturing facility. This allows us to be agile with product delivery, offering some of the most competitive lead times in the industry.

And with a British-made product, comes British quality. We work to the highest standards in manufacturing and safety, and we operate with BSI ISO:9001 /14001 accreditations. We also boast impressive accreditations including SMMT membership,  a Director who sits on the board of ALLMI as well as being Ford QVM, VW Integrated partners, and approved converters of Nissan and Renault.

As a result, we’ve provided thousands of cranes and loading platforms in commercial vehicles to businesses up and down the UK and around the world.

The Penny Hydraulics Process

Step One, Enquiry

Every project starts with an enquiry. And as our product range is diverse and customers often require a bespoke solution, we have to dive deep into the detail to understand exactly what’s needed to the resolve the problem at hand.

Once you’re in touch, we ask a few questions to make sure we completely understand your requirements.

We start by finding out what you will be lifting and how we can help you to do the job safely and efficiently. We do this by asking questions like:

  • What are you lifting?
  • How heavy are the items you are lifting and what is the maximum safe working load that you require?
  • What is the reach of the crane and how far do you need to move the items?

We then need to learn more about the vehicle, so we can assess its suitability for installation and operations:

  • What is the make and model of the vehicle?
  • What is the wheelbase of the vehicle?
  • What is the roof height of the vehicle (if applicable)?
  • What is the drivetrain of your vehicle, is it rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive?
  • What is the voltage of your vehicle, 12v or 24v?
  • Will there be enough remaining payload for the vehicle post-conversion?
  • Where do you want the lifting equipment to be positioned?
  • Is the crane or loading platform accessible and can it be operated correctly and safely?

Once we have all this information, we can identify the right product that suits both the application and the vehicle for safe and efficient operations.

Step Two, Design & Quote

For many designs, we will refer to our large database of fits to ensure that you have the correct fixing to fit your vehicle, we can usually provide you a quotation from this. If you are looking to put a crane into a vehicle that we haven’t worked on before – we may request that we have the vehicle on site so we can develop a new fit.

We do this by measuring the vehicle and using the latest CAD software, our VME design team create a model of the fixing (usually a pillar or corner bracket) to fit it correctly into the vehicle and they perform stability calculations to ensure that the solution is fit for purpose.

Step Three, Questions and Answers

Our team are always on hand to answer any questions you have as quickly as possible. We assign you an Account Manager who will be your primary point of contact through this period, helping you to fully understand the product and reach a decision.

If you need any further help or advice along the way, all you have to do is contact us and a member of our team will direct your query to the relevant department.

Step Four, Fabrication

After we’ve answered your questions and receive sign-off on the design and quotation, our onsite fabrication team can get to work.

All SwingLift and LoadLift products are made from start to finish by our fabrication team in Derbyshire. Plus, we fabricate full/partial sub-frames for the PH hydraulic crane range in-house, this helps to protect the integrity of the vehicle by strengthening the chassis, improving the stability, and ensuring the crane is safe for operation.

Due to the custom nature of our range, it’s crucial that our fabrication team work closely with the design team to ensure the product is made to the exact specification discussed during the quotation stage.

Should we run into any issues during manufacture, the designers are a just short walk away from our fabrication facility, so issues can be addressed and resolved in a timely manner.

We also work hard to ensure that the customer is notified of progress at each stage of manufacture.

Step Five, Installation, Training, Servicing and Maintenance

Once the equipment and its fittings have been fabricated, the next step is the installation.

Installation can be done at our HQ by our in-house team of experienced fitters. The fitting team ensures the product is installed onto the vehicle securely, meeting safety standards at every step.

Upon installation, we also provide basic operation training to those who need it. If required, we can also provide ALLMI accredited training at an additional cost.

Alternatively, installation can be carried out by a third-party bodybuilder or vehicle converter. We package the equipment and fitting kit ready for shipping, including comprehensive instructions to ensure installation is as simple as possible.

After your vehicle-mounted lifting equipment has been commissioned, it’s important to stay on top of servicing to ensure your equipment lasts as long as possible and is maintained in line with industry regulations.

Servicing packages from Penny Hydraulics include regular scheduled visits to keep your lifting equipment in top condition and confirm that you stay compliant with legal obligations.
